Mona Phipps describes growing up in the state of Oklahoma in the 1930's and 40's, and the rich family tapestry of being a 12th generation American. From visits to her ancestral home in Kentucky, to working in her father's "great depression" era bakery, from the bloody post civil-war stories told by her grandfather, to the great dust bowl of 1930, the author takes the reader on a touching and heartfelt journey into the experience of growing up amidst the red dirt fields of early 20th century Oklahoma.

Also available on Red Dirt Lady, Mona's followup to Red Dirt Girl.

Red Dirt Girl An Oklahoma Memoir eBook Mona Phipps

First of all, I agree with the previous reviewers: this is a delight.
I, too, remember the three tubs for washing, the dressing for blackberry picking, sleeping in featherbeds and under quilts. This book, in a number of ways, took me back to the farm in Okfuskee County and seeing, once again, my grandmother standing in the back next to the garden and the chickenhouse, swinging the chosen pullet by the neck.

Red Dirt Girl An Oklahoma Memoir eBook Mona Phipps Reviews

Excellent read and enjoyed these well told stories. Often don't we wish we could go back and hear the stories we didn't think to ask about growing up. A bit before my time but, I too, have memories of a simpler time and long ago memories. Thoroughly enjoyed this read and was so sorry it ended so quickly. Please write more, Mona. You have another fan.
I was born in Oklahoma in the 1950's. This book brought back a lot of memories of those times.
My grandma used to make sauerkraut and keep it in the well house where it was cool.
We would have to chase the chickens out of the outhouse to use the rest room, which really was an adventure, since we had indoor plumbing at home.
I loved Mona's stories. I was born in Oklahoma in 1939 and came to the high plains of Texas when I was two years of age. My parents were both Oklahomans. They could tell me some similar stories.
I grew up in Cushing OK a few years later so many of these stories bring back memories. Mona used words that I haven't heard in years and describes small town events that I have forgotten. This book is very real and honest. I enjoyed the perspective even though I am not in her family.
The author paints a picture of a time gone by, when families worked together and played together. Parents handed down to their children skills, knowledge, and values. It was a little hard to get into for some reason, but still an enjoyable read.
I expected a "story" ... but there wasn't one. It was just a the author's hit and miss memories
... very few of them even interesting. I did finish the book, even though it didn't hold my interest.
The reason I bought the book in the first place was because Mona Phipps lives in the same
town I do and also, she is my friend's neighbor.
I read this short story through because I kept thinking there was a point or something to be learned, but it was more like a letter to a friend with daily happenings and the development of ongoing relationships. The author survived some hard times, but then so did many families during the depression years. It was neither boring, nor very interesting.
