It is the late 1800s. A young child is kidnapped by her tutor and secreted into seclusion, muted by terror. Will she find sanctuary, and her voice, before it is too late and she is silenced forever? Can anyone she risks to trust, truly protect her? What if safety is only an illusion and nightmares come alive?

As the child's trail goes cold, Mark Monsey, police officer, remains haunted by it. In spite of little departmental support, he doggedly follows what clues he has. Crisscrossing the county from isolated lighthouses, estates, and groundskeepers cottages, to limestone caves, spooky cellars and dreary train stations, he becomes increasingly aware things are not what they seem and he is being deceived. Can he find the truth, and will it matter when storm clouds and death spread faster than any of them can foresee?

Emilia Na'ama Yehuda 9781536869897 Books

Na’ama Yehuda is an excellent storyteller. From the first page Emilia captures your heart and imagination, and defines your most dreadful fears. Each character is developed in such a way as to carry that character through the entirety of the book. It is a page turner as the storyline quickly moves in an ominous direction that at once is terrifying, but with a powerful and enduring thread of hope not only for the characters’ safety, but for healing. The suspense is palpable.

The cast of characters is wonderful from the most powerful and lovable to the weakest, most despicable we can imagine. Using Big Ben, the horse, and Billy, the puppy, as characters to heal and connect Emilia with unconditional safety is enchanting and very real. Kayanne’s growth through the book is also an excellent reminder of our own personal possibility.

The author’s use of words to describe the setting makes you know the place; you can feel it in your bones. You will not be disappointed as you read this book, and its outcome definitely opens to possibilities that are good, but may not necessarily be fully possible. The resolution serves all the characters, but still leaves the reader on edge, and filled with enduring hope.

Emilia Na'ama Yehuda 9781536869897 Books Reviews

Emilia is a compelling story. There are interesting characters and a brisk pace with elements of suspense. This is a most satisfying read that also serves as an important teaching tale about the heartbreaking ramification of childhood sexual abuse. Through this novel, one learns about the signs of childhood trauma and how to care for child who has experienced such harm. It's a difficult topic handled deftly in this intelligent, tender story that will leave you (unwittingly) better informed and cheering for Team Emilia.
I absolutely loved this book!!!! Couldn't put it down. What a relief to read a book that accurately described trauma and dissociation and how to offer love, support, and healing. Suspenseful, entertaining and educational in a way that the reader doesn't realize they are being educated.

This is a gift to all those who have experienced trauma in their lives as well as to all those who love them.

With appreciation to the author for her kind heart and wise and brilliant mind.
This novel is both a good read, and a beautiful symbolic story of healing through trauma. The sacred lighthouse as a symbol of safety is very meaningful and profound and resonates deeply. I love the way that Yehuda takes her time with the story to explain different stages of trauma and coming back to functioning as she writes her novel. I am really touched by this book and will pass it on to a child trauma therapist. As a poetry therapist, I would use an excerpt in a workshop. Thank you for this life-enhancing work. I will be thinking about these characters for a while longer.
Na’ama Yehuda’s second published novel, "Emilia", is a must-read. The subject matter is solemn—the effects of abuse and terror on a young child and the adults who strive to protect her. The descriptive writing flows seamlessly from chapter to chapter and the suspense is choreographed so well that the reader may well have trouble putting it down. The novel is set in a coastal region somewhere unspecified in what may well be the British Isles or North America, if the rural dialogue is any indication. The time is the 19th century, again unspecified but an era without the modern conveniences of electricity, telephone or automobiles. The child is being shuttled from home to home and ends up in the charge of a man who fills the role of villain of the piece spectacularly. I won’t spill the details because I would hate to spoil this riveting and compelling read. As a psychologist specializing in the treatment of the after-effects of early childhood trauma in adults, I was struck with how accurately the author portrayed the clinical presentation of a terrorized child. The other major characters in the novel each have their own complex histories and all these interweave to create a fascinating story of fear, violence, pathos, healthy attachment and triumph over adversity and evil. I recommend this book to clinicians who work with children and those who work with adults who were traumatized as children. Ms. Yehuda’s vivid and believable portrayals arise out of her career as a speech and language pathologist with a focus on children. She has recently published "Communicating Trauma Clinical Presentations and Interventions with Traumatized Children" (Routledge, 2016), a book that has receive wide professional acclaim and should be read by any clinician, teacher, parent, foster or adoptive parent as invaluable information in reaching and helping the traumatized child. "Emilia" gives a powerful fictional illustration of the types of issues that such a child, and those who love and work with her, experience. Brava, Ms. Yehuda! Excellent writing indeed.
